Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Treatment in Silver Spring, MD

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), also known as Peripheral Vascular Disease, is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. Legs are the most common victims of PAD and they don’t receive enough blood flow to keep up with demand. This causes leg pain when walking. Peripheral artery disease is also likely to be a sign of accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries. This condition can not only affect the legs, it can result in a reduced blood flow to the heart and brain. If untreated, PAD patients run into the risks of heart attack, stroke, and transient ischemic attack.

What Causes Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?

PAD is caused by the narrowed arteries resulting in the insufficient blood flow to the limbs and also due to the accumulation of fats in the arteries. It’s more common with elderly people and has direct correlation with diabetes and high blood pressure.

What Are the Symptoms of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?

Severity of PAD varies widely. While some patients suffering from PAD might not have a recognizable symptom, many experience leg pain or cramps while walking. Typical symptoms include pain in leg or hip, numbness or weakness, soars on the toes, feet or legs, no or weak pulse in the legs, and coldness in the lower leg and feet.
